CL 2/11

“Waking Up and Taking Charge” – Kamenetz (Continued . . )

Who would agree with her proposal? Why?

I believe that most young people would agree with her proposal and even people of older generations. Take the 1970s for example, a time a protest and lobbying and standing for a cause and what you believe in. I also think that young people would agree with her because the issues she is talking about do effect young people coming into college life and entering adulthood. I think young people are starting to realize that only they can make the changes that they want to see.

Class ideas: People who have the mentality that you must go to college because joining PACs could help keep tuition costs down.

Who would disagree with her proposal? Why?

I think a lot of loan companies and credit card companies would disagree with her because she talks about lobbying high interest rates on credit cards and student loans. If students started protesting credit card companies, or refusing credit all together, it would end up hurting these businesses in the long run.

Class Ideas: College admin wouldn’t agree because they are losing money. They have to change the budget.

List her claim, one reason, and one piece of evidence.

Claim: Young people need to get involved and use their voice about things that are effecting them. Join a PAC for political change.

Reason: Young people are being taken advantage of. Students could then leverage their numbers against congress.

Evidence: Credit card companies have high interest rates and no longer require cosigners like they once used to. See Pg 411 paragraph 25.

Rhetorical Appeals

ReasonCharacter
Logical ” If you want something to happen then you need to be the one to make it happen.” She has a very clear case and multiple examples to back it up.After reading it becomes clear that she does not agree with what a lot of colleges and loan companies are doing by taking advantage of the naivety of young people.

Consider Aims of Argument:

ConvincingPersuasion
She is trying to convince her readers that the only way to see real change is by protesting, lobbying and getting involved with the powers that be to gain some sort of control. She is trying to persuade young people to get out and get involved and take action (Join a PAC) in the things that effect their life and will possibly effect the rest of their lives.

Responsible Reasoning

Well InformedReaders in MindArguments contextSelf-Critical
She provides a lot of evidence to support her ideals. For example she talks about VA21 and all of the strides that they have made towards change. She starts off speaking directly to her audience and trying to make direct connections. She really makes it clear that she is trying to connect with young people. She is aware that the way that things used to happen was by lobbying and protesting and getting involved. She addressed how things used to be and how they are now and what has changed between then and now. VA21 is sponsored by credit companies, but you have to take wins where you can. (You have to start somewhere)
