CL 2/13

Toulmin Analysis of “Waking Up and Taking Charge”

Find the Claim: “Young people urgently need a strong generational movement – for higher education funding, fairer credit laws, a better-designed school-to-work system, etc. . . “

Look for Qualifiers: I would say her claim is absolute

Look for explicit exceptions to the claim: Paragraph 9 : She states that information could be a start ? ?

Find reasons to justify the claim: College is more out of reach. Small individual protests can only make small ripples

Evidence: Yale sit-in caused Yale to lower it’s expected tuition contribution because students couldn’t afford tuition.

Yes it seems accurate and believable.

Warrants: College is too expensive and the only way to change it is by having A LOT of people do something about it.

I do share these assumptions. College is barely affordable for me so I can imagine it would be for a lot of others as well.

Rebuttals: VA21 is sponsored by credit companies, while this may be contradictory for some, she pointed out that everyone needs funding to start somewhere. What is good for now won’t always be good.
